Keeping Perspective

The research on coin sizing, particularly in historical and collectible currencies, reveals various aspects of coin dimensions and their perception:

  1. Perception of Coin Size and Inflation: Studies indicate a general tendency to underestimate the sizes of coins. This perception is influenced by attitudes towards the coin and is not solely determined by inflation or the actual value of the coin (Leiser & Izak, 1987)(Leiser & Izak, 1987).
  2. Schema for Coin Sizes: Research on memory recall of different coin sizes, like pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, suggests the existence of a mental schema for coins, with a common recalled size for different denominations (Rubin & Kontis, 1983)(Rubin & Kontis, 1983).
  3. Historical Coin Sizes and Inflation: Historical studies show that the estimated sizes of British coins changed with decimalization and inflation, influencing people's perception of coin sizes (Lea, 1981)(Lea, 1981).
  4. Automated Measurement of Coin Diameter: An image-based method for determining the diameter of historical coins has been developed, offering high accuracy and robustness, beneficial for numismatists (Zambanini, Herrmann & Kampel, 2013)(Zambanini, Herrmann & Kampel, 2013).
  5. Market Performance of Collectable Coins: An analysis of the historical performance of collectible coins from 1967 to 2015 shows a significant annualized nominal and real return, providing insights into the collectible coin market (Maslar, Obaid & Pukthuanthong, 2020)(Maslar, Obaid & Pukthuanthong, 2020).
  6. Coin Value and Perceived Size: A study on the perceived size of coins in relation to their value found that newly introduced coins are initially underestimated in size but later overestimated. This perception is linked more to the coin's value than its actual size (Smith, Fuller & Forrest, 1975)(Smith, Fuller & Forrest, 1975).

These studies collectively provide a diverse understanding of the sizing and perception of coins, both historically and in the realm of collectibles.
